Many countries run international open competitions when defining concepts for their newly planned cities to incorporate future development trends, urban planning expertise, and innovative ideas. TMK locks in drilling contractor for Mongolian gas giant
TMK locks in drilling contractor for Mongolian gas giant
TMK Energy is one step closer to a pivotal drilling program at its giant Gurvantes XXXV coal seam gas project in Mongolia after selecting an experienced local contractor following a multi-month tendering process. The detailed tendering process attracted several highly-competitive applications, including two Chinese drilling contractors with close ties to potential strategic partners.

The company says its preferred contractor has excellent background knowledge of the existing pilot well project and offers fixed-price drilling to ensure cost certainty for the upcoming three-well program that is expected to kick off next month.

Following a recent trip by TMK to Mongolia, management says its view has been reinforced that there is “real demand” for a source of domestically-produced natural gas in Mongolia. Energy security is key driver for the nation, in addition to cleaner and more affordable energy source for Ulaanbaatar – the coal-powered capital of Mongolia and the world’s most polluted city.

The Gurvantes project covers a giant 8400 square kilometres of Mongolia’s South Gobi basin. It is considered one of the world’s most prospective coal seam gas basins, with TMK’s best-estimate (2C) contingent resource of 1.2 TCF limited to just 60 square kilometres of the patch.

In addition to Mongolia, the company could also tap into adjacent markets such as China as the project expands into full-scale gas development. Gurvantes lies just 300km north of China’s main east-west gas pipeline, creating potential access to what is one of the world’s biggest gas markets.

Realpolitik in Ulan Bator
Realpolitik in Ulan Bator
More than four times the size of Germany, with only about 3.5 million inhabitants, probably the most sparsely populated country in the world, glorified by tourists as the home of the last nomads, one of the most resource-rich countries in the world, with no access to the sea, with borders only with Russia and the People's Republic of China - that is the Republic of Mongolia.

Maintaining good relations with both neighbors is part of the state doctrine of Mongolia and each of its governments. The dependence on them is evident in just a few economic figures: around 30 percent of imports come from Russia (including almost 100 percent of all fuel) and 34 percent from China.

Conversely, 84 percent of exports go to the People's Republic, followed by Switzerland, which imports gold worth one billion Swiss francs annually (just under nine percent of exports). This large share is due to the dominance of Swiss gold refineries with a 70 percent share of world production. Mining products make up 90 percent of exports, just over 50 percent of which is coal, for the export of which to the People's Republic of China a railway line was specially built.
