MONGOLIA UPDATE
Mongolia's parliamentary elections on June 28, 2024, marked several significant milestones in the country’s democratic process
Mongolia's parliamentary elections on June 28, 2024, marked several significant milestones in the country’s democratic process
For the first time in Mongolia’s history, 78 members of parliament (MPs) were elected from 13 majoritarian districts, with an additional 48 MPs elected through proportional representation in a nationwide constituency. The election results saw the Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) securing 68 seats, followed by the Democratic Party (DP) with 42 seats, the HUN Party with 8 seats, and both the National Alliance and the Civil Courage and Green Party with 4 seats each. Notably, the MPP won 50 constituency seats and 18 from the party list, ensuring a majority presence in parliament alongside three other parties that surpassed the legal threshold for representation.

On July 1, 2024, the General Election Committee presented the results of the 2024 regular election for the State Great Khural (Parliament) of Mongolia to President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh. According to Article 17.1 of the Law on the State Great Khural of Mongolia, the first session of the State Great Khural must be scheduled and convened by a presidential order within 30 days of the regular election date. In other words, the President will determine when the first session of the parliament will take place. During this first session, the newly formed parliament will elect the Speaker of Parliament and the Vice Speakers.

EU-Mongolia Relations: Toward a Strategic Partnership
EU-Mongolia Relations: Toward a Strategic Partnership
Building on its Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, the EU is poised to strengthen ties with Mongolia, a country eager to broaden its international partnerships and reduce overreliance on its powerful neighbours. This Policy Brief examines Mongolia’s development and the current state of EU-Mongolia relations, proposing actionable steps to intensify bilateral cooperation. By promoting Mongolia’s economic diversification and global connectivity efforts, the EU can enhance its economic security and support Mongolia as a strategic partner.

Furthermore, the Brief states that six recommendations are needed in order for the EU to offer a strong ‘third neighbour’ alternative and build a strategic partnership with Mongolia:

1. Pursue mutually reinforcing economic diversification: To enhance its economic security, the EU needs to secure alternative import supply chains of critical raw materials; likewise, Mongolia needs to diversify its range of exported goods and export markets. The Union should thus upgrade its Global Gateway ambitions to expand Mongolia’s export options while diversifying Mongolia’s energy mix.
