On February 13, 2025, the "National Strategy for Big Data and Artificial Intelligence" Conference was held, involving public discussions on developing a national strategy.
The Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation, and Communications of Mongolia and the United Nations Development Programme jointly assessed the readiness of artificial intelligence and are working together to develop the national strategy, based on suggestions and opinions from the public and private sectors, scientists from the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, university teachers, and young Mongolians working in this field abroad. The strategy aims to prioritize mining and energy as key sectors for the development of artificial intelligence in Mongolia and leverage the country’s advantages in these sectors.
Particularly, Mongolia’s unique climate creates an ideal environment for operating energy-efficient data centers, combining abundant coal and renewable energy resources. Therefore, this strategy aims at making Mongolia an attractive place for investment in the field of artificial intelligence infrastructure from all over the world. Artificial intelligence (AI) has become the biggest field for competition among countries. In addition, while dramatically increasing productivity, AI allows countries to produce new products and services incorporating advanced technology.
According to studies, AI alone will bring an estimated USD 25.6 trillion to the global economy by 2030. Utilized not only in the economy sector but also in key sectors such as defense, education, and health, AI is considered a vital factor for the security, social, and economic development of a country. Therefore, countries around the world are developing their AI strategies. In 2017, Canada was the first country to establish a national AI strategy, while today, 75 countries around the world have national AI strategies.

The "Tourism Week-2025" commenced on February 10, 2025, with the "Regional Development and Tourism" Forum.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports, Tourism, and Youth of Mongolia and the Mongolia Tourism Organization are jointly organizing this Forum for the second year to strengthen coordination within Mongolia's tourism sector and enhance collaboration between the public and private sectors. Participants are discussing the sector's pressing challenges, potential solutions, and pathways forward. They emphasized that tourism plays a vital role in economic growth and development, highlighting the importance of continuous innovation and reform, as well as the need for timely and efficient cross-sector information sharing to foster sustainable tourism.
The tourism industry in Mongolia came to a standstill during the pandemic, incurring losses of MNT 1.6 trillion. However, it has since rebounded, with revenue increasing by 65 percent. In 2023, Mongolia generated USD 1.2 billion in tourism revenue, and in 2024, the country welcomed 808,956 tourists, earning USD 1.6 billion.
Mongolia is seeking to welcome 2 million tourists annually by 2030 and increase tourism revenue to USD 8 billion. To achieve this, the country plans to develop tourism in regional clusters. For example, the central region will be developed as a sub-region focused on diversified agriculture and industry, while the eastern region will be developed as a specialized area for historical tourism and intensive agriculture.

The President of the European Council, António Costa, along with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, will be travelling to Uzbekistan for the first-ever EU-Central Asia summit on 3-4 April. The summit will be hosted by Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, with the participation of the leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.
The summit will present a key opportunity for the EU to demonstrate its geopolitical interest in intensifying bilateral engagement and enhance regional cooperation with Central Asia. Given the evolving geopolitical landscape, marked by Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine and ongoing developments in Afghanistan, relations between the EU and Central Asia have become of increased strategic importance over the years.
During the summit, the EU will affirm its commitment to scale up cooperation in areas of mutual interests, which include transport and digital connectivity in the region and with the EU, critical raw materials, economic and security cooperation, and energy transition.
Background
High-level relations between the EU and Central Asia have intensified over the past years, with two leaders’ meetings held in October 2022 in Kazakhstan and in June 2023 in Kyrgyzstan. Additionally, numerous ministerial-level discussions have taken place, with the most recent in Luxembourg in 2023, establishing a joint roadmap for deepening ties between the EU and Central Asia. The roadmap identifies concrete action points to enhance interregional dialogue, including the commitment to hold a summit. The 20th EU-Central Asia Ministerial meeting will take place on 4 March 2025 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, and will also be dedicated to summit preparations.
In 2019, the EU adopted a new Strategy on Central Asia, which highlights the growing strategic relevance of the region for EU interests and builds upon the positive developments in regional cooperation over the years. The updated strategy aims to foster a stronger, modern and non-exclusive partnership with the countries of Central Asia so that the region develops as a sustainable, more resilient, prosperous, and closely interconnected economic and political space.
The EU is the second trading partner for the region, as well as the biggest investor with over 40% of the investment in the region originating from the EU. To further deepen bilateral ties, the EU has negotiated enhanced partnership and cooperation agreements (EPCAs) with all Central Asian countries, except Turkmenistan.
